Preparing for Success
High Schools*
*Preparing for Success will not be calculated or reported for elementary and middle schools for the 2024 Report Cards to allow scoring for the new SC READY Science test to be developed.
Purpose of Indicator
Preparing for Success shows if students in a school are meeting state standards in Science and Social Studies.
What This Means
Preparing for Success is worth 10 points. A high rating point indicates more elementary and middle school students are meeting state standards in SC READY science and high school students are earning passing grades on End-of-Course exams in Biology I and in US History and the Constitution.
What makes up the Rating for this indicator?
This indicator is determined by SC READY science test scores given to students at the end of the school year in grade 4 for elementary schools and grade 6 for middle schools. For high school students, this indicator is determined by End-of-Course exam grades in Biology I and in U.S. History and the Constitution.
What information is measured in the indicator, but not used to calculate overall ratings ?
For Elementary Schools:
- The number and percentage of students entering Kindergarten ready to learn
- The percentage of 1st and 2nd graders on track for 3rd grade success in Reading and Math
For High Schools:
- The percentage of students passing a Civics test
Something To Think About
Are students entering Kindergarten in the school ready for learning? Although not factored into the rating for this indicator, Kindergarten Readiness (which is measured at the start of Kindergarten) will be reported on Elementary School Report Cards.
Key Message
State end-of-year tests are designed to measure if students are on grade level. Ratings for this indicator are based on how many students in a school are achieving grade level success in Science and Social Studies. Additionally, while not factored into the rating for this indicator, Kindergarten Readiness shows the percentage of kindergarten students who are “ready to learn” during the first 45 days of school.
