Purpose of Indicator
The High School Student Success indicator shows if high school students have earned the required 24 credits (four in English and four in math) to be eligible for graduation in four years OR shows if students have reached a successful high school outcome within five years of beginning high school.
The following are successful high school outcomes:
- Earning a regular high school diploma;
- Earning a GED; or
- Earning the SC HS Employability Credential.
What This Means
This indicator is worth 12 rating points. A high rating point indicates that a school has prepared its students to fulfill a successful high school outcome.
What makes up the indicator that leads to a Rating?
High School Student Success specifically measures the percentage of students at the end of each year who have earned the credits needed to graduate in four years.
Therefore, this indicator rating consists of students who are either considered on track to graduate or who have achieved a successful high school outcome within five years.
Something To Think About
The On-Track to Graduate measure, which is part of the HSSS indicator, was developed based on research from the University of Chicago’s Consortium on School Research. “On-track” students are more than three and one-half times more likely to graduate from high school in four years than off-track students. The indicator is a more accurate predictor of graduation than students’ previous achievement test scores or their background characteristics.
Key Message:
Along with this indicator, consider the College and Career Ready Indicator for a more complete picture of how well a high school is preparing its’ students for life after high school.
